Building a Fully Functional Tiny Home in The Sims: A Challenging Experiment

Introduction

In the world of The Sims, players often push the boundaries of creativity by building unique and innovative houses. One such challenge is building fully functional tiny homes in the smallest spaces possible. This article explores the experience of attempting to create a fully functional home in a one-tile-wide space in The Sims, detailing the challenges faced and the tricks employed to make it work.

Transcript:

I love building tiny houses in The Sims  and I've done quite a few challenges where I try to make full houses in  like, the tiniest spaces imaginable. And I mean trying to fit an entire fully functional space in like, a two by two square. I'm not even sure we can call that a tiny house because at that point it's barely even a room.

Doing challenges like this  requires a lot of tricks,   a lot of move objects and like,  clipping things into the wall. And obviously a lot of playtesting to  make sure it still functions that way. And I've got another idea for a tiny,  tiny build challenge that to be honest,   I am not certain is even possible.

So I've done a fully functional house  in just a two by two room before,   but today I want to try to make a fully  functional home that is only one tile wide. I feel like it can be kind of long and  skinny, but it can only be one tile. I've done this before with two tiles and that  was fine because there was walking space,   but with just one tile, I don't really  know how we're gonna manage this.

When I say fully functional I mean this house  has to be able to meet all of my Sims needs,   so I want a toilet, a shower, we're gonna need a  place to eat, we're gonna need a bed, something   to fill my fun need, and I want to try and fit  it all inside of just this one tile wide space. First things first, we're gonna  need the move objects cheat on.

And then usually when I'm doing this sort  of thing I like to lay out all the items   that I'm gonna need just so I can kind of  start to visualize what is gonna happen. Tthis bed situation I'm really not sure  about, I think we might have to have some   fake walls or something just so that we can  make sure your sim can actually get in there.

I also know that you can kind of scoot the   bed pretty far into the wall  and they can still use it. I learned that when I made the two  by two room, like they're actually   quite good at using beds that are you  know, almost completely in the wall. So I might try and scoot that as far as  possible and see if she can still use it.

(01:50) Are you kidding? Wait, that doesn't  seem right. How does that work? How can she still use the bed like this?  How far back can I put it this way? You know what -- oh, that's too far, okay. It just takes a lot of constant like,   scooting and testing to see just  how much they're able to handle.

Okay, she can use that, she will  get in the bed and sleep like that. We're gonna have to figure out something to cover   the outside of this, but for  now that is a very good sign. I don't think that if I put a door  there she'd be able to use it,   like Nancy, can you get in and out of this room? Oh wait, you can? Oh, you  can't get back in though.

Wait. No, you can get in, but you  can't use the bed anymore, why? I don't see the problem, what's the issue? I wonder what a bunk bed would be like. This is kind of a different concept.  The bunk bed situation is a little   bit annoying because they get into it  from like, the wrong side of the room.

If she would get into it from  like, a ladder over here,   it would be easier for me Nancy, but whatever. Can you use this? No. It was too good to be true. I should have known she wouldn't  use it. Yeah, okay, fine. All right, back to the drawing board, I'm gonna  try and put this as far into the wall as I can.

All right, she can use that,  let's just keep it there. I'm gonna delete this whole wall for now because  I really don't know if it's gonna be possible for   her to walk in, like do you think if I have a door  over here she'd be able to get over there still? She's being quite dramatic about it, I  must say, because she uses it sometimes.

It's kind of rude Nancy. You can get  over here, come here. Now get in the bed. No! You used it before, get in the bed! I don't want a welcome wagon either,  go away. I'm very busy right now. I still don't understand how  this is possible I must say,   but whatever, if you can use  this bed, that is your choice.

If you want to use this bed  like this, that's totally fine. Oh no, really? Even this is too big.  Actually I don't know what I was thinking. Here I was assuming I could put this  dresser here, I definitely cannot. If I size it down I could. If I put one  wall there can you still get in? No? Why do you think the wall causes her so many  problems because it works when it's open? I don't really care, if it has to  be open then it has to be open.

We can try and do some fake stuff  to make it seem closed. Look,   there's like, these slats from Eco Lifestyle. Those are technically on the outside of the wall,  but I think that she'll be able to get in still. Yeah, that's fine. So we can do stuff like, that we can try and  like, do sneaky things to make it still work.

Okay, well that opens up some more  possibilities for the kitchen situation,   so we have our dresser, we have the bed. The kitchen I'm probably gonna also want to  scoot as far into the wall as it'll let me. What if we had just like, a half kitchen?  I'm thinking like, maybe there could be a   mini fridge and a microwave because  I feel like that should still work.

Well, I mean I'm gonna test it,  so we'll see if it still works. Come on Nancy, you can do it. Oh, she's  getting herself some cheese crackers. All right, do you want to have a pepperoni  pizza roll up next? Can you use the microwave? Oh, okay, that's fine. She's kind of standing  like, outside of her one tile space which is rude.

Can I get it any further in the  wall. Pepperoni pizza roll up. Oh no,   you can't use it like that, okay, fine, sorry. I suppose that is a little bit far into the wall,   so I get it. I was just hoping  that maybe it would still work. All right, well there you go, we'll just put   a bush back here or something  to try and hide the back of it.

After that we need a toilet and a shower. Here's  my thing, the shower will work, like your Sims   can walk on top of the shower so it's possible  that I could mount the shower like, over here. Should she really be showering on  top of her bed? No, definitely not,   but I think it'll -- oh, never mind.

Here I thought it was gonna work,   maybe it won't work. You can shower on  top of the toilet though, that does work. Oh, no it doesn't, okay, sorry. Wow.  False alarm, I'm a liar. I guess it's   gonna have to be at least this big so I  can give myself a little bit more room. If we do it like this maybe I could put a wall   and we can try and have the  bathroom be like, separate.

Maybe I could have the  bathroom have a door into it. Wait, what if it was like this? Let me  see how far over I can get the toilet. I know you can make a fully functional  bathroom with a sink in just one tile,   so like, I know this will work. And we could probably get a sink  too. Oh yeah, that's fine, okay.

Which one of these is the skinniest  sink? Maybe like -- what happens if   you size a sink down? Do you  think she can still use it? Nancy, where'd you go? Oh my, she teleported  away. Can you wash your hands in this? Oh, it's kind of weird because  she's like, not using it right,   like visually it looks weird,  but that's not my problem.

Yeah, she still showers. Oh my gosh,  okay, that's fine. There you go Nancy. There's your one tile bathroom. I kind of  like it. New question, can I have a door? Like, will she be able to use  all this if there's a door there? I'm gonna go with probably not.

She can get in, can you use this? No. Nancy. It's not the door's  fault, it's the wall's fault. If I could have like, a half  wall, if there could be like,   a wall that just went to like,  here instead, that would be better. Let me see if I can do any scooting because if I  can get this further over, maybe she can use it.

No? Nancy. That would be so cool though,  if we could get this to work like this. Maybe I'll like, go back and have this part   be wider because it still --  it looks like a full house. Um, the bathroom's gonna have  to be in a different location. The bathroom is not gonna work like this. Nancy, can you use this? Can you get in  and out? No, that's in the way? How? How? You have a door, don't be a liar.

I  don't see why this is a problem for you,   personally I think it shouldn't be a  problem and I think you're being dramatic. What is it about the wall that  confuses her so much? I'm gonna   try and scoot this like, way back into the wall. Maybe if she had a little bit more space  she'd be less confused. Can you get in now? No, why are you so confused? I want  the door, this is like a real house.

If I can make this work then  it's like a real house. Okay,   she can't use the toilet anymore,  I've gone too far with the toilet. Can I size the toilet down? Obviously  she'd be floating on that too. Come here Nancy, come inside.  Can you use it? No? Okay. I want it to work so bad! I would  really love if I could make this happen.

Can you get in and out now? Still? Why  do you think this is causing the problem? Okay, what if there was no  sink. She doesn't need a sink,   washing your hands is kind  of overrated, in my opinion. What does she need a sink for? It's fine. Okay, she can use the toilet when it's over  here, and that's a little bit more space.

There we go, can you get out  now? Now that's in the way? Nancy, why is it that three seconds ago  the fridge was fine, and now it's not? You can still use the bed. How  is that possible? How is the   bed fine and the fridge is not? It makes no sense. What if I sized the fridge down?  Would that make you happier Nancy? No, it's worse. Okay.

Why not? I'm gonna come back to that because  I'm just -- I'm gonna have to figure   out something for that, it simply will not do. So in the meantime, I guess I can  just try and make the exterior more   interesting because I actually do kind of like it. It's not the worst thing I've done.

I wonder if we   could try to do something to make  these walls look more like a wall. Like, if I took this and I raised it up just  one, it's a little bit less interesting,   but it is more private so it feels  like you've got more of your own space. See, this is actually kind of cool. I hope. I hope it's kind of cool. We can  put a little light above the door.

I was thinking that I would do  some sort of tile in this part,   like we could fully tile the walls in the  bathroom and then maybe the living space. The bathroom and the living space, yeah, okay.  Maybe the living space can have like, wood floors. There's not really a lot of walls that we  have to worry about painting because there's   um, to be honest, not really  a lot of walls in general.

I have to figure out a solution  to this because she won't use it. And I'm not changing the exterior, I just won't.  I'm too into the exterior now to change it. What if I size it down and put it over here? Oh! Oh, she'll use that. Can you use the  bed? Oh, okay, we'll do a little switch then.

I can put the dresser on this side,  the dresser can go right here. I could probably make the  dresser full size again too. I actually like that because it's taller. The  reason I wanted to put something behind the   bed is to sort of like, separate  the bedroom and everything else. If we do it like that, we can  put some bookshelves on it too.

Oh my gosh, do you know what, I  wonder if we can use this TV thing. I'd have to like, raise it up a  bunch. I think this might confuse her,   like she might get upset about the fridge. Oh no, she's fine. Wait, can  you watch this TV? No way! Oh my god, wait, why are you bored? Uninspiringly decorated? You  suck Nancy. That's so rude.

I'll give you a single painting,  you can have one painting. Maybe we could do a full-length  mirror right here so that she   can get her charisma skill up or something. I guess that's all she needs, I don't  think that we should bother with a sink. I think she got a little bit too confused from  the sink before, so I probably shouldn't add one.

And I'm scared of putting any extra  clutter in case it confuses her also. Let me just triple check again  that she can use everything still. No wait, you can't get to this now? I think it's  the dresser, I think it's the dresser, hold on. Can you get over there now? Oh, Nancy. Nancy, please.

Everything was fine before,   come here. Okay, you can use that, you can shower. Maybe she got -- no, you can't shower anymore?  Okay, you could shower before so what's the issue? Where'd she go? All right, no decorations. No decorations,  decorations are bad for Nancy. Do you want to try and sleep? I ruined it? Oh my god, how is this happening?  Is it this? Forget the bookshelf, hold on.

Are you that confused by the  dresser? Ugh, what changed? Okay, she's in, no, you can't -- okay,   is it the dresser? It was fine before  Nancy Landgraab, it was fine before. Do you need more bed space? I  can give you more bed. No! No! Oh, I felt so good about this too. Is it that?  Nancy, you actually cannot be serious right now.

I didn't do anything, all I added was  the mirror. You saw she used it before! Okay, everything is fine, go inside. Okay,  she can get inside. Now it's the toilet? I didn't do anything to the toilet! The  toilet is in the same place it was in before. Okay, I happen to know that you  can scoot this kind of into the   wall and she'll still use it, so  maybe she needs some more space.

Come here Nancy. Oh my god, it was the toilet? I will never understand you Nancy  Landgraab, I will never understand you. Okay, now the dresser is causing us  problems. Okay, everything works again. She just used the TV autonomously,  she got food. Okay, we slept. She's using the bathroom and  she's showering, okay, it works.

Oh my god, it works! It's fine, everything works. If I really wanted it to be, this probably  could be a whole tile less, to be honest,   but I kind of like how it looks so  I think I'm gonna keep it like this. Just for the vibes because the  vibes are actually kind of cool. I'm gonna quickly paint the exterior,  not that it matters that much.

I mean   you can't even really -- you  can't really see the exterior. Should I dare rotate the lot? I'm scared  if I do that it's gonna break everything. Nancy, when I say this I really mean it. If you   decide to not work right now after I  rotated it, I'm gonna start crying. Oh no, we're fine, okay, I would have  actually started crying if that broke it.

I gave her a little pathway to walk up to the   house, I think I'll put some little  bushes kind of in the front here. We need a tree that's kind of like,  big. A tree that's kind of wide,   so that you can't see the bed  sticking out from the back. We need to put something there, maybe if there  was like, some landscaping, I don't know.

Just like, a bush or two right there because that   way looking directly on you can't see  the bed just halfway through the wall. I really like this sort of  yellowy orange wood we've   got with the color scheme so I might  try and match that with some flowers. Oh, the tree is clipping, that's not  good. There's always something with this.

Okay, that should work, and that totally  hides the back so you can't see it. I'm gonna get a trash can too.  I wonder -- maybe we could put a   fence because if we put a little fence  right there, and then we sort of like,   fenced in the ugly parts, if  we just like, tried to hide it. Oh, I trapped Nancy by accident, but  if we just like, tried to hide the   ugly bits like that, at least this  way the neighbors won't see, you know? The neighbors won't know that we we  have a bed sticking through the wall.

I've just got like, floating pepperoni pizza  roll-ups everywhere from my playtesting,   but yeah, that might help hide it and then  everything should still be functional. I think. Nancy, come here. You  can throw away all your dishes,   you can still use the bed, can you still use this? Have some cheese crackers, come on.

Yes! Okay, I think we did it, I think we  made a fully functional one-tile house. Look, she's reading. The only  thing that's kind of bothering   me now is the fact that you can  see a little bit of this floor. I wonder if I could maybe put  some quarter tiles under there. Ugh, you can see it from the front.

Like, that really bothers me,   the floor being like that, but  I put a little bit of extra tile   and then I guess if we had terrain  paint that might help a little bit. We've got a nice utility room back here. It's like when people kind of put a fence  or something around the AC unit in their   house to try and make it look nicer, but  instead of an AC unit, it's um, the bedroom.

All right, there you have it friends:  a fully functional one tile wide house. It actually looks kind of good from the outside,   probably one of my better tiny homes from  the outside, which is saying something. Oh, I didn't even make it into a  tiny house, that was the whole point. The whole point is that it's a tiny house.

So  technically it's one by four, so it's still a four   tile house total. It's the same size as the two by  two house that I did, just in a different layout. I think that this was a  little bit harder. Oh, okay. Well, I'll put it up on the gallery eventually. I can't do it now. I was gonna say,   I think this was a little bit harder  than the two by two house that I did.

When it was two by two it felt like I had more  room to work with which sounds really weird,   but it was like, a little bit  easier because you had like,   just this had to be walking space, and  these three tiles could be full of things. Whereas with this one, I need to have so much more walking space because everything's up against the wall.

So it was a little bit more difficult. I do think this would have been possible to make three by one,   I just kind of wanted it to look nice, but  I think you could have super easily had the bathroom stuff right here and it would have been fine. Like, you don't need to have a dresser. But hopefully, you enjoyed this video,   I really love doing little stuff like this so I hope you liked it too.

And really quickly, I want to remind you all that today is actually the last day of my fundraiser for St. Jude. As of recording this, we've just passed  $400,000 raised on our Twitch channel. And we're gonna be live playing  the 100 Baby challenge all day today if you want to come by and hang out with us.

I'm going to link my Twitch streams down below,   but also our donation page if you would like to donate, but please don't feel like you have to. And on that note, I'm gonna catch you all tomorrow, okay? Bye, everybody. One tile is cursed, that is so small. Such a  tiny, tiny space. I cannot believe it worked.
